kindergardens - week 2 {big gardener, little gardener}

This week, Kiddo has been racing through his homework as soon as he gets home from school.

Why?

So that he can spend the whole evening in the garden with Daddy.

My "little gardener" can't wait to get out there with my "big gardener," and they are usually there until bedtime.  I expect some of the novelty will wear off soon, but I am treasuring his excitement and enthusiasm while it lasts.

The other night we were spreading a layer of mushroom soil (aged manure) on our garden - partly for the nutrient value for our plants, partly because it is a proven method for somewhat effective at deterring the barn cats

Kiddo was very eager to help.  He got out his trusty "Little Tikes" wheelbarrow.

(note wilty rhubarb in the background that is understandably
upset with me for transplanting it right at its peak)

"Little Tikes" is a little too little.

So he went to the next size up.

It was a little bit big.

But we managed.

Sort of.

By the way...what were we thinking putting our garden as far from the driveway as possible?  That little blob of blue in the background is the tarp covering our dirt pile.  It's a looooong trek with a heavy wheelbarrow.  Even if you're not 7 years old.

The barn cats were very interested in the goings-on.  This one came over to check things out.

("what are you doing to my perfect litter box?")

He tried to schmooze his way into our hearts by being friendly and cute.

It may have even worked...until I saw him scratching in the mushroom soil the next morning.

This week, Kim shared her heart for sharing our gardens with others.  I love her idea of growing extra veggies to donate to needy families who don't have the time, money or space for a garden.  We are so blessed by our garden, and it would be so cool to share that blessing, and to teach Kiddo the joy of giving.  We are fortunate that our church already has a "Vegetable Basket" program.  Families from our church collect garden produce weekly, and then it is trucked to several food pantries in the area.  While we haven't set aside specific areas of our garden for that purpose, I am sure that we will have veggies to share!  Kim will be keeping a running tally of the pounds of food donated by KinderGARDENers this summer, so I am excited to see how much we can add to the total!

Now, check out what more KinderGARDENers are doing over at The Inadvertent Farmer

P.S.  As Kim mentions in her post, it's never too late to join in the KinderGARDEN fun!!  ;)

You need to find a smaller adult wheelbarrow for that boy! And maybe a fence to deter the neighborhood cats. Sorry the mushroom soil isn't working so far.

You made me laugh with your story about wheelbarrowing,

Before he got his "own" wheelbarrow, he tried to "help" me push my loaded wheelbarrow down to the garden...He tried it in front of me, behind me, and next to me...but wheelbarrowing really doesn't work to well to do it with someone else - it really is a one person job:)...

I pumped the air up in the old wheelbarrow and it was really light...but he struggled keeping it level (I think he spilled/dumped some several times on the way down to the garden...but he was giggling the whole way:)...

What he really needs is a double wheel wheelbarrow for the extra stability...

I'm a little worried about the distance we'll be trucking our soil this year, too... that little tykes wheelbarrow looks the perfect size for our Bean, I'll have to go grab one for him. He likes to help the Big Gardeners around here, too! Have a good week :)

@mama - too bad i can't send you ours! i don't think we'll be using it any longer. but i'm sure the postage would be as much or more than the wheelbarrow is worth. :)

The wheelbarrow pics are priceless. I remember having those same issues as well.

Love the shots with the wheelbarrow! It always looks like such fun to kids, and then they try it and see how difficult it is to balance. So glad your men had time out in the garden together. Those are the times from which memories are made.
