kindergardens - week 13

Here's a look at what's been happening in our garden this week (when we've actually gone out to check it - we have been having a record-setting heat wave this week with temps up to 102, so we've been spending a lot of time in the air conditioning):

(the deer have been busy - this is the first year we have had them in our garden - perhaps the drought has taken other food sources?  Hopefully they leave behind enough for us to eat!)

(blackberries are beginning to ripen)

(gourds are blooming)

(eep!  cute little baby gourd!)

(pumpkins are also blooming and setting little babies)

(so far, so good for Hubby's peanut experiment)

(can't WAIT for our sunflowers to bloom!)

(the gourds have reached the top of the pole bean tunnel!)

(this was taken several days ago, so the gourds are even taller now, but it gives you an idea of HOW FAR our pole beans have to grow before they catch up.  I'm not sure it's going to happen)

Hopefully the heat will break, we'll get some rain (we haven't had any for over a month, I think), and we'll be out spending more time in the garden next week!

summer's simple things {the library}

It's Tuesday, which means it is "Summer's Simple Things" day over at The Inadvertent Farmer!

When it is this hot outside...

...we look for things to do in the air conditioning.  We have been heading to the library weekly since school got out - their summer reading program is in full swing and we are taking advantage of it.

 

  
There are story times and craft projects and games.  We have a reading log where we keep track of the minutes our son reads, and then we can turn it in each week to earn small prizes.  And we come home with a stack of books that keeps us entertained for a while.

4th of july weekend

It was a busy weekend, with a lot of fun stuff going on.

There was baking...

(and, for the record, I CAN NOT beat cream cheese without leaving lumps.  Even when softened.  Argh!)

There were frogs...

There were butterflies...

There was poison ivy.  There will be no picture of poison ivy rashes.  But be assured that I am itchy.  Very, very itchy.

There was grilling, and lots of food, and family and friends, and homemade ice cream...

There were good-byes as we sent off Hubby's brother to the other side of the country...

There were couch cushion tunnels...

And there was Wii-playing...

There was swimming.  We are so thankful for our generous friends who offer us the use of their pools during the summer.  Sweet relief from the heat. 

It was a good weekend.  Tomorrow it is back to life as usual, at least for a few days.  Hubby's college friend and his family are coming for the weekend.  We are excited!!!  This week we will be getting ready for their arrival - I have been using the guest room as a storage room ("put it here and close the door and pretend it doesn't exist until I know what to do with it"), so I have some work to do before they get here.
