A few days ago we went through a few things in Hubby's parents' house while the whole family was in town. While it was hard in some ways to do it so soon after the funeral, it was a fun time of being together and listening to Hubby and his siblings reminisce as they pulled things out of closets and drawers. There were quilts and children's books and dishes and old games. Letters and tools and cookbooks. Pictures and scrapbooks and coin collections. And lots and lots of canning jars.
I got to bring some home.
They are perfectly imperfect. They make me wiggle with happiness every time I look at them.
My mother-in-law was the canning queen. Her cellar was packed with food she put away every summer.
Due to her Alzheimer's, she can't can any more. She may or may not even remember the hours and hours she spent canning fruit and vegetables from her garden. But when I see my new row of happy blue jars, I think of her.
And I smile.

Oh, I love the old blue jars. Treasure those! I have a few really old jars that were my grandmother's. I no longer use them for canning as I'm afraid that I will break one but I use them for storing dried beans. Of course, the blue color makes the beans look 'interesting' they are beautiful.
What a great keepsake.
