following our noses

My son and I went on a sniffing trip around the yard and garden.

We found many plants that predictably had distinct smells, like these:

lavender, tarragon, mint (we smelled 2 kinds), oregano, sage and thyme (we smelled 2 kinds of this, too).

We also found a few surprising ones that I didn't think really had a smell.  Like this one:

Who knew lamb's ears were something to smell??  Not me.  They were one of his favorites.  His others were mint and tarragon.  Mine too.  I was about ready to rip out the tarragon - it had gotten rather gangly and unruly and appeared to have lofty ambitions that included taking over the whole herb garden - but after smelling it anew, I changed my mind.  It is here to stay.  For now.  But I will be a strict disciplinarian.

And then there were some that we thought were smell-able, but we were disappointed:

Roses!  I thought surely they would be a hit - but we couldn't smell anything!  I know!  Roses!  The first flush of blooms we had a few weeks ago was heavenly, but this second flush isn't fragrant at all.  Sigh...I will check them again in a few days.

Other plants included in our olfactory adventure included hydrangeas, daylilies, foxgloves, astilbe, catmint, spirea, geraniums, and a few others that I've since forgotten.

So what do you smell in your garden?

I normally smell all my flowers, but since we just moved I smell my new tomato, basil, marigolds, and lavender plants!

thanks, kim!

author - yum! do marigolds smell? we have some, i didn't even think to try those. i am jealous of your purple beans. we are growing boring plain green ones...that is, we WILL be, if we ever get the seeds in the ground. :(

At college I worked on the Grounds Crew one Spring/Summer, and part of our job was to plant all the flowers in our area. Our area traditionally had tons of marigolds. They definitely have a smell, but it's not one of my favorites. I love your new blog, BTW!

The beans are starting to bloom purple! I could share seed, but do you trust a crazy gardener to give your address too? Lol. Marigolds do smell. It's a unique smell all their own, do smell them!

I don't think it's probably too late. It'd be fun to try. I would be happy to share them as there was about 50 seeds in the packet and I used 4. You can email me at aboutabug@hotmail.com No worries on returns, it's fun to do it. :)
