For several years now (well, okay, three years), my son has planted his own flowers in our flower beds. He enjoys going to the nursery with us and picking out flowers and pointing them out to visitors throughout the summer.
This year, however, he wanted his OWN flower bed. So Daddy dug one up for him. While Daddy was digging, my son walked around the yard making notes about which plants he wanted in his garden. Here is his list:
He got out his trusty trowel and helped me dig them up and transplant them to his garden, referring to his list regularly to make sure we didn't forget anything.
After he had picked through Mom and Dad's existing plants, we made a family trip to the nursery where he picked out additional plants that he liked (Mommy and Daddy picked out additional plants, too. You can't go to the nursery and NOT come home with something). His choices were mostly annuals, and included petunias, impatiens and verbena. Once everything was in the ground, there was very little room left - he had filled up the entire bed!
He also has a small path through his garden...he is excited about making his own stepping stones sometime later this summer. (Hopefully we can do that without buying the expensive kits at the craft store - I need to do more research on that one).
He is really enjoying his garden so far - he is convinced that his flower bed is the prettiest one in the yard.

I still love his list - - - and that he actually used it!
