kindergardens - week 15 {the harvest has begun!}

[long post alert!  I apologize in advance!]

We've got vegetables in our garden, ready to pick!  We are so excited.

We've been picking grape tomatoes (and munching them before they make it to the house)...

We just pulled our onions last night ("these are EASY to pull, Mom!")...

And got the giggles when he pulled up a couple of large ones ("This one is a MONSTER onion, Mommy!")

We picked a couple of carrots (NOT easy to pull)...

And got the giggles again when we found this wonky one...

Our carrots are bitter (blech).  Maybe we are pulling them too early?  How do you know when a carrot is ready?  Inquiring minds want to know.

We also picked a few bell peppers...

And got tickled again by MONSTER green peppers!

He insisted on taking pictures in the tunnel.  Speaking of the tunnel - here is what it looked like about 8 days ago...

And now!

We're going to have to come up with some way to brace it, I think - the top is starting to cave in from the weight of the vines, and now the gourds are getting heavy, too.

But it is so cool!  Definitely the highlight of our garden this year.  We will have to do one of these again next year, maybe with a more permanent frame.

We also picked some of these...

And some of these...

We've been checking in on our pumpkins...

("Mommy, the leaves are very soft and fuzzy!")

So far, so good, despite the cucumber beetles that are crawling all over the vines these days.  So far they are limiting themselves to the blossoms, but it is only a matter of time, I think, before they do some serious damage.  Unfortunately, I can do little about them without killing the honeybees that have been very busy in the area.  Grrrr...  Hopefully they will leave a few blossoms to turn into pumpkins!

Speaking of busy bees...they were out harvesting, too!

I like our sunflowers.  They make me happy.

I love how tickled your son got! I love the gourd vines. I grew some up a fence when Matthew was a baby, but I love the arbor look. Maybe when we get moved back to our house we can built one.
