kindergardens - week 16 {sad, sad day}

We are in mourning.

We've had a death in the family.  Well, an eminent imminent death, anyway.  Our gourds are in the process of succumbing to the dreaded wilt.

And our pumpkins are following in their footsteps...

Boohoohoo, sniffle sniffle.  I am so sad that we won't get to see these little cuties grow up.

Sigh, pout, whine.

Our tunnel is already thinning out.  Waaaaaaa!!!

Sniff....  The good news is that now the pole beans are getting a lot more light and actually have a chance of growing beyond 6 inches tall.

In other parts of the garden, our crop of Queen Anne's lace is doing fabulously well...

 (such a pretty weed!)
Kiddo's flower bed is flourishing and happy...

Our purple beans are blooming...

And we are enjoying the peppers, onions and tomatoes that we've harvested so far.

YUM.  It almost makes me forget the tragedy that has befallen us.  I am hanging on to the gardener's creed:  there's always next year!  One of these years we WILL succeed in growing pumpkins and gourds.  Just not this year.

Check out The Inadvertent Farmer to see what's happening in other kindergardens...hopefully they had a better week than we did!

Having great food on the grill is such a great reward for the work put in!

What causes the 'wilt'? Why is it fatal to the gourds? can you just cut out the offending leaves/vines and keep the healthy ones?

From what I understand after googling it, the wilt is an incurable disease carried by the cucumber beetle. We have been infested with cucumber beetles this year, but I didn't want to spray them b/c I was afraid I would kill all of the honey bees. I think if you catch it early enough, it might be possible to cut out the sick parts of the plant, but in our case, the whole center of the plant is sick - the ends of the vines are still healthy, but when you get closer to the roots, they are all turning yellow and wilting. Live and learn, I guess!

Wow...I have never dealt with wilt before, tragic.

But the rest of your garden looks marvelous and the grill looks yummy!

Yes there is always next year...every gardeners motto! Kim

So sorry about the wilt. It comes and everything goes, just like that. Everything else looks wonderful though!

My pumpkins are being attacked by squash bugs. It may already be too late, but I'm going to go and try and save them this afternoon. You have my sympathy!

The stuff on the grill makes my mouth water! And your flowers are just gorgeous. We've been dealing with death around here too. Gardening is so emotional! :)
